Strong motion seismology in Romania

Adrien Oth European Center for Geodynamics and Seismology, Walferdange

The Vrancea seismogenic zone is located at the bend of the Carpathian mountain arc in Romania. Here, frequent and strong earthquakes occurr within a narrowly confined focal volume at a depth of 70-150 km.
Four such events with magnitude greater than 6.5 took place during the last century, and especially the large shock in 1977 led to disastrous consequences on Romanian territory. Therefore, a better understanding of these earthquakes and their shaking potential is a crucial step towards improving seismic hazard assessment in the region. Strong motion seismology deals with the measurement, analysis and estimation of strong ground motions caused by potentially damaging earthquakes. After a brief introduction to the fundamental concepts needed in the framework of this presentation, the main effects contributing to strong shaking are discussed for the case of Romania: the seismic source process, the attenuation of the
seismic waves on their travel paths, and amplification effects due to local site conditions.
